Cross-Browser Compatibility

3 June 2008, 14:29

I would like to be able to ensure that my website is at least viewable on some level to a wide range of the most popular browsers of today. Below are a list of testing procedures I have carried out in each browser I have access to. If you use a browser that is not listed below, could you please send me an email (kachii@gmail.com) or leave a comment with browser and operating system version information, and any bugs or glitches that you have faced.

Recommended Browser

If you're not running Internet Explorer then I don't think you have too much to worry about, and probably already know all about internet security, so I won't bore you. Move along! However, if you are still using Internet Explorer, it is time to consider an upgrade!

Since 2004, Internet Explorer has seen a sharp drop in its share of internet users from almost 95% to below 79% in 2007. Even though there's still a majority, you might want to consider the reasons why so many millions of people have been switching away from the dreaded blue E. I'm not going to write an essay, there's hundreds of websites out there that can do that for you if you'd just take a few minutes to type 'why is internet explorer bad' into Google, but simply:

  • There are many, many infrequently patched security vulnerabilities.
  • There is a distinct lack of web standards compliance.
  • It runs at a snails pace.
  • The business practices of Microsoft as a whole are extremely poor.
  • There's just so much better out there!

So what should you use instead? Try Firefox - with over 18% of the market share in May 2008, that makes it the world's second most popular browser after Internet Explorer, and for good reason. Try it out and see for yourself - you won't switch back! Besides that, check out Opera (Windows), Safari (Windows, Mac), or Konqueror (Linux).
