It seems that every day of my life I am suffering from some ailment probably due to my increasingly lazy and cake-filled life, and of course my genes and upbringing. I am currently trying to win the fight for better health, and fully intend to share it with you. For blog issues on the subject please check the health and fitness categories.
I am being made constantly aware of the health problems that the average westerner faces each day – obesity and lack of exercise leading to cancer and heart disease. However, I’m being faced with the opposite end of the spectrum – I’m borderline underweight and underdeveloped and totally unfit.
What’s Wrong?
I attribute most of my health problems to the fact that I was brought up as a vegetarian during the 80s and early 90s. Quorn was only really available in the mid-90s, and vegetarian alternatives before then were generally poor. I ate very little as a child and believe I must have been deprived of some nutrients. Now, I am very small in height, weight, boob mass, and other such things. I still have one lowly baby tooth left, and some teeth didn’t even grow at all! Strangely, what teeth I do have are particularly strong because my mum thought it would be a great idea to feed me fluoride. I am no longer a vegetarian but since I did not eat meat for so long, I am finding it hard to adjust even nine years later – I still can’t eat much seafood or red meat.
My mum has been a vegetarian for all of her life and the effect it has had on her is clear. We both suffer from iron deficiency anaemia, making us very weak and lethargic. Iron is a very important mineral (especially for women, who lose a lot of it during menstruation) and since the only really good source of it is red meat, neither of us get much of it. According to Wikipedia, 20% of women of childbearing age in the US suffer from iron deficiency anaemia.
Other health problems of mine include chronic headaches (which runs in the family unfortunately), continual aches and pains, insomnia, allergies to everything under the sun, and almost total inflexibility. Besides that, I’m just not happy with the way I look. I take on the appearance of a prepubescent eleven year old – I would love to gain a little more weight and be more toned.
What Are You Going To Do, Then?
Firstly, I intend to develop a healthy eating plan where I can increase my intake of calories and nutrients to a decent level. Secondly, I intend to exercise five or more days a week. You can look more into what I’m currently trying to achieve and what you can do for yourself if you are in a similar situation to me by browsing the related pages in the navigation.
