Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator

3 May 2008, 19:11

What Is It?

The Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is an assessment based on the typological theories of Carl Jung (the famous psychiatrist). There are four ‘dichotomies’ (sliding scales of contrasting types) each one pertaining to different aspects of our personality. They are as follows:

Extraversion (E)Intraversion (I)
Sensing (S)Intuition (N)
Thinking (T)Feeling (F)
Judging (J)Perception (P)

As I stated above, because this is a sliding scale, if someone falls into the ‘extraversion’ category this does not mean that they are strongly extraverted – just that they have a preference to extraversion over introversion though there may be an extremely thin line between the two. Also, none of the traits should be considered negative – they are all different ‘qualities’ that contribute to the way a person will react in certain situations.

You can read more about the different dichotomies and what they mean at Wikipedia. The combinations of all the scales make sixteen different ‘types’ of personality. Read on for information about my type.

It is considered that the best judge of your MBTI is yourself – it is therefore recommended that each type is studied in detail and then you should choose one for yourself. There are various tests available, and I have taken about five in my time and they all throw at me this same result. A test I recommend is the one located at Similar Minds.

My Result

Hopefully reading about my MBTI will give you further insight into who I am and what I am like. It appears that I swing slightly to the left side of all the dichotomies – making me a ESTJ (Extroversion Sensing Thinking Judging). Myers-Briggs describes my type as follows:

ESTJs are practical, realistic, and matter-of-fact, with a natural head for business or mechanics. Though they are not interested in subjects they see no use for, they can apply themselves when necessary. They like to organize and run activities. ESTJs make good administrators, especially if they remember to consider others’ feelings and points of view, which they often miss.

I consider my type allocation to be a fairly accurate representation of me. Although, when I am set to work in a group I am often shy and reclusive until things get into full swing when I will ‘step out’ and unintentionally take control over any major decisions. Worse, I will try to set people tasks, and when they don’t conform to exactly what I envisioned in the first place, I will modify it myself until it does. I think this is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to working in a team. I don’t ever see myself as a leader, but a supervisor/organiser, certainly.

Looking through more websites about my personality type I came across the ESTJ Profile at TypeLogic. This has more to say about my type, things which I further agree with.

The ESTJ is outspoken, a person of principles, which are readily expressed. The ESTJ is not afraid to stand up for what she believes is right even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Anyone who has ever known me for the slightest moment will agree that this fits me to a T. I swing to the right when it comes to politics and often this will get me into trouble (particularly during political debate), but I also believe in upholding justice and creating a fair, albeit traditional, society.

I also took the test in a Facebook application called ‘MyType’, which had the following to say about ESTJs as young adults (the stage of life I am currently at):

As young adults, they focus on their goals, both personal and professional. They build on education and career goals set earlier in life and do all that they can to make these goals become reality. They seem to have less confusion or difficulty than some types in choosing a career or selecting a mate because they like focusing and making decisions.
